The operating principle of exhaust systems is easy to explain, but the individual processes are as complex as they are ingenious, primarily dealing with the exhaust gases that must be discharged from the engine. Simplified, the exhaust consists of an exhaust manifold, a downpipe, a catalytic converter, a muffler, and of course, the tailpipe.

Beneath the vehicle, the toxic gas is discharged via the exhaust manifold, before being directed straight to the subsequent downpipe. Afterwards, the exhaust gases reach the essential part of the catalytic converter, where the gases are cleaned by special filters, resulting in fewer nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons entering the ambient air. This is followed by the muffler, which regulates noise according to modern acoustic methods, before the exhaust gases exit through the tailpipe.
