Among others, a 1000-hour endurance test is conducted on an engine in a Garrett Engineering Laboratory, thrust bearing test, maximum tolerance of the bearing system is checked, material fatigue, and a vibration test, etc.

The Garrett GT and GTX series are all dual ball bearing, precision balanced, and oil- and water-cooled. There is also the older generation T series, which are mostly journal bearing. The GTX series differs from the standard GT in that it has a special, larger compressor wheel with more blades, leading to increased performance and slightly better response. Its important for ball bearing turbos not to receive too much oil pressure. Therefore, an oil restrictor with a 0.9mm hole is used. A ball bearing turbo tends to spool up approximately 400-500 RPM sooner than a journal bearing turbo.
