Garrett is one of the few turbocharger manufacturers that subjects its turbos to multiple qualification tests, meaning you always receive a top-quality product. A 1000-hour durability test on a motor in a Garrett engineering lab is conducted among other tests like thrust bearing test, checking the maximal tolerance of the bearing system, material fatigue, a vibration test, etc.

     

    The Garrett GT and GTX series are all dual ball-bearing, finely balanced and oil and water-cooled. Theres also the older generation T series which are mostly journal-bearing. The GTX series differentiates from the normal GT by having a special, larger compressor wheel with more blades leading to higher performance and somewhat improved response. It’s important for ball-bearing turbos not to receive too much oil pressure. Therefore, an Oil Restrictor with a 0.9mm hole is used. A ball-bearing turbo typically responds about 400-500 RPM sooner than a journal-bearing turbo.
