Garrett is one of the few turbocharger manufacturers that subject the turbos to several qualification tests, meaning you always get a top product. This includes a 1000-hour durability test on an engine in a Garrett Engineering Laboratory, thrust bearing test, the maximum tolerance of the bearing system is tested as well as material fatigue, a vibration test is performed, etc.

     

    The Garrett GT and GTX series are all dual ball-bearing, finely balanced, and oil- and water-cooled. The older generation T series are mostly sleeve-bearing. The GTX series differs from the standard GT in that they have a special, larger compressor wheel with more blades leading to increased performance and slightly better response. Its important for the ball-bearing turbochargers not to receive too much oil pressure. Therefore, an Oil Restrictor with a 0.9mm bore is used. A ball-bearing turbo typically responds about 400-500 RPMs sooner than a sleeve-bearing one.
